The Storm Bass series is the first bass I ever built and the instrument that marked the beginning of my journey into lutherie. The Storm series became the foundation of my work, and after building five instruments and gaining more experience, I revisited the design to develop the Short Scale Custom Series, which is the evolution of this original concept.
This particular bass is equipped with Precision-style pickups, delivering a classic, full and punchy tone. It features a distinctive Hipshot D-style bridge, known for its stability, functionality, and comfortable playing feel. The instrument is strung with flatwound strings, enhancing its warm, vintage-inspired character.
The fingerboard features my signature Japanese-inspired cloud inlays. In this instrument, the clouds are designed with subtle movement, symbolizing motion, travel, and the feeling of a journey.
The body is constructed from three pieces of wood:
On top sits a drop-top of Greek plane wood, finished with a stain to highlight the natural grain of the wood which I named SmaugSkin
The bolt-on neck is secured with five bolts for added stability. The neck itself is made from flame maple, paired with an ebony fingerboard, while the nut is crafted from bone to ensure optimal resonance and tone transfer.
The Storm Bass is more than just an instrument - it represents the starting point of my work as a luthier and the origin of a design that continues to evolve.
